I am curious to hear of any wierd projectionist jobs. I met a man once who had been a projectionist on cruiseships for 20 years. Another man was a projectionist at the Boeing airline plant(industrial films). Yet another had been a projectionist at a 35mm porno theater.
Also searching for info on international cinemas. I have been to many cinemas in Mexico that had dirt floors and the screen was a concrete wall that was painted with white housepaint. At one of those cinemas they were showing an old Tarzan movie, dubbed in spanish("Buenos dias Jane! Donde esta Cheetah?"). Though it was an indoor theater, there were a few kids firing bottle rockets at the screen.(Johnny Weismueller would have been furious!) People started whistling loudly when the movie slipped out of focus. This is a tradition in much of latin America and in Italy too. They do this to alert the projectionist, who is usually sleeping in the booth, due to the heat.
On this particular night the whistling continued for over 5 minutes. Finally a boy was sent out to look for the projectionist, who was at a nearby restaurant eating his dinner. He came in, sharpened the focus and wandered back across the street to finish his meal. Ah, Mexico!!!
