I was reading about the reference to Brad Pitt explaining that changeover cues are called "cigarette burns" in the trade. I have never heard of this...anyone else?

Perhaps it was just made up for the movie?

I never heard them called that until this whole "Fight Club" thing came up. I've always heard them called Clint Pharrs(Spelling may not be right as I don't have my cue marker sitting by the computer, pretty sure it's "ph" and two r's).
I'm sure that someone may have, in the past, made a comment that they looked like cigarette burns.

I know of them as 'cue marks' or 'motor marks'... I have never (until last weekend) heard the term 'cigarette burns' used to describe changeover cues before.

and you were close, its Clint Phare, the manufacturer of the cue scribing device..
