While browsing eBay today, I came across a Japanese carbon arc lamp marketed as a health product. Bask in unfiltered ultraviolet rays in the comfort of your own home... It even comes with extra carbons!

Having found this, I did a search for "carbon arc" and found this listing, featuring a very interesting theory of how carbon arc illumination actually works...
