		  Introduction
		  ------------

The Dolby SR*D format combines a stereo analog SR encoded optical soundtrack 
(SVA) and a Dolby Digital optical soundtrack on the same print.  The tools and 
techniques for aligning the analog soundtrack reader have been in place for many 
years and are well developed and standardized.  However, the Dolby Digital 
soundtrack is a relatively new development and different methods are required to 
align the digital reader (Cat. No. 699, Cat. No. 700, or Basement Reader).  In 
order to ensure a consistently high grade digital playback, Dolby Laboratories 
has developed software for evaluating the alignment of the digital soundtrack 
reader.  

The DRAS Digital Reader Alignment Software rapidly and reliably determines 
the important alignment parameters of the digital reader.  The DRAS software 
will increase Dolby Digital film playback reliablilty by pinpointing alignment 
problems that can lead to non-correctable errors during playback.  


Throughout this document and other Dolby publications the terms "Dolby Digital" 
and "Dolby Digital sountrack" are used to describe the digital blocks that are 
printed on the film between the sprocket holes.  The terms "Dolby SR*D" or 
"SR*D" are used to describe the film format that also includes the analog 
soundtrack.  The term "DFSP" (Digital Film Sound Processor) is used to describe 
the DA10, DA20, or CP500 Digital Film Sound Processors.


		  DRAS Software and Required Equipment
		  ---- -------- --- -------- ---------

The DRAS software requires the following minimum configuration:

o     33 MHz, 486-based PC with 4MB RAM, hard disk, 1.44 MB 3.5" 
	  floppy disk drive, and high-speed FIFO serial I/O card, with MS-DOS 
	  operating system 
o     VGA Multi-sync Monitor
o     Keyboard
o     DRAS Program and Installation Diskette
o     DRAS User's Manual
o     Microsoft MS-DOS User's Guide and Reference
o     15-foot serial data cable, D-type 9-pin Male to D-type 9-pin Female
o     10-foot alignment test loop, CAT.NO.530

Required equipment for installation include:

o     2mm Allen wrench (Supplied with Cat.No.700)
o     3mm Allen wrench (Supplied with Cat.No.700)

The DRAS system recieves high speed serial data from the DFSP (DA10 or 
DA20).  To work properly with the 115K baud data rate, the BIOS (Basic I/O 
System) on the PC motherboard must have low latency counter-timer interrupt 
servicing.  Additionally, the PC must employ a high-speed FIFO buffered UART 
(Universal Asynchronous Receiver/Transmitter) so that rapid data reception can 
be sustained, even in the presence of simultaneous reader alignment computations 
and graphics screen updates.

Technical support by Dolby Laboratories will be provided for DRAS software 
running on a PC containing the required hardware.  When calling for technical 
support, the customer will be asked to supply information on his hardware 
configuration.  Additionally, information on the content of the config.sys and 
autoexec.bat files may be required 


		  Compatible Monitors
		  ---------- --------  

The DRAS system requires a VGA color monitor.  The customer should check 
that the monitor used is a VGA, "multi-synch", or "multi-scan" monitor whose 
minimum capability is 16-color digital input at 640x480 VGA resolution.  


		  Hardware Installation
		  -------- ------------

All cables connecting the DFSP (DA10/20) and the PC should be attached with the 
power to the DSFP and the PC turned off.

The DFSP connects to the PC via a 5 meter (15 foot) cable with 9-pin connector 
on both ends.  On the back of the PC there are two 9-pin male D connectors 
labeled COM1 and COM2.  Use the 5 meter cable to connect either COM1 or COM2 
on the PC to J3-Serial Data on the back of the DFSP.  Mounting screws are 
provided to prevent disconnection from the PC or DFSP.


		  Software Installation
		  -------- ------------

The DRAS software and support files are supplied on the 3.5 inch floppy 
labeled DRAS Program Disk.  The user is encouraged to make a backup copy of 
this diskette and keep it in a safe location.  They should be copied to a 
subdirectory on the hard drive named C:\DRAS.    

If the user needs to re-install or upgrade the DRAS software, simply insert 
the DRAS Program Disk  and copy all of the files into the DRAS directory


		  Upgrades
		  --------

Upgrades bulletins have been issued to improve DA10, DA20, and CP500 
performance through hardware modifications and new firmware on some circuit 
boards.  The latest instructions detailing how to perform these upgrades are 
available by calling Dolby Laboratories Inc.  Check the DA10, DA20, or CP500 
to insure that the unit has been upgraded per the latest documents.
