SDDS QC Software Version 3.000 Beta
                                21 November 1996

This software is a beta release of the SDDS QC software.
Please report all bugs and desired enhancements to Mike Orosz
	at Sony Cinema Products.

A detailed user's manual along with an installation procedure
	will be available soon.

Installing the SDDS QC Setup Software

	     1. Insert the 3.5" SDDS QC software installation disk into
		the A or B drive
	     2. Start Windows
	     3. Select Run from the File menu at the top of the Program
Manager window (or from the START button located at the
bottom of the Windows 95 Program Manager).
	     4. At the run prompt, enter a:\install or b:\install depending on
which drive the disk is inserted.
	     5. Follow the installation procedure instructions.

The installation procedure will install 7 files in the installation
	directory specified by the user:

		QC.EXE - the QC executable
QC.INI - the QC windows startup file
BC40RTL.DLL - Borland support library for the QC software
BWCC.DLL - Borland support library for the QC software
		INSTALL.EXE - the install/de-install executable
AUTOANSR.EXE - software to configure a modem to auto answer
		README.TXT - this file

The installation procedure will also install a QC program group in
	the Program Manager.

	II. Program usage

	1. Double click the mouse cursor on the QC Icon in the QC Icon program
	   group.

	2. Once started, the software is configured to automatically
connect to the SDDS DFP processor using the COM1 serial port.
A dialog box will be displayed on the monitor indicating that
the software is trying to connect to the DFP. You can abort
the automatic connect by using the ABORT button on the dialog box.

IF THE SOFTWARE IS STARTED FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER A FULL INSTALLATION
IS MADE (i.e., a new QC.INI file is created), the DFP-D2000 serial
number is set to 00000. The QC software will not automatically
connect to the DFP-D2000 processor with this serial number.
Use the Connect to DFP menu at the top of the QC display to connect
to the DFP for the first time. Make sure the DFP Serial Number is
correct when connecting to the DFP.

	3. Once connected, QC statistics can be collected by using the START
button at the bottom left of the QC display. Once the START button
is selected (i.e., using the mouse to place the cursor over the
button and pressing the left mouse button), the START button is
renamed to STOP. The QC software will then poll the SDDS DFP
   	   processor.

	4. When film is running and SDDS is being reproduced (i.e., the
Data Present LED on the front panel of the DFP-2000 processor is
illuminated), the software will begin to plot the ECC errors detected.

	5. When a reel of film is finished, the software will automatically
stop polling the DFP. At this point, you can print (PRINT button)
out the report and then use the RESET button to clear the system
memory for the next reel of film. Repeat steps 3-5 for the next
	   reel of film.

	6. In addition to printing out a report (i.e., the PRINT button),
the QC software can be configured to generate QC report files and
can be configured to automatically generate reports once a reel of
film has been tested. Using the CONFIG pull-down menu, the various
report options can be selected. If file output is chosen, a QC
project file will be created for each reel of film tested. One
benefit behind using QC project files is that a permanent record
of a tested reel can be saved and loaded at a future date. This
may be handy in situations where a printer is not available during
	   a QC test session.

In addition to configuring the report options, the QC software will
automatically generate a report (print a report or generate a project
file or both if configured) whenever an end of reel is detected.
This feature is useful in platter operations where reel changes occur
very quickly. NOTE: It is very important that the Window's Print
Manager is running. If the Print Manager is not running, considerable
time will be required as the software sends data to the printer. This
delay in printing will hinder performance during platter operations.

The PRINT button is used solely to generate printed output and
overrides the report options selected in the CONFIG pull-down menu.
The REPORT button generates reports in accordance to the report options
selected in the CONFIG pull-down menu. If the NO REPORT option is
selected, selecting the REPORT button will result in no report
generated (either a file or printed output). However, if the NO
REPORT option is selected and the PRINT button is selected, printed
	   output will result.

	7. The QC software can be configured to test trailers. Use the CONFIG
pull-menu and select TRAILERS from the test options portion of the
dialog box. The QC software will then be configured to handle reels
	   with multiple trailers and/or logos.

	8. When defining the default printer (via the CONFIG pull-down menu),
the software automatically remembers the selected printer configuration
the next time the software is started. In addition, the software also
remembers if normal prints or trailers were tested the last time the
	   software was operational.

	9. If using a Westrex Test Jig, the QC software can be configured to
control the test hardware (i.e, stop/start, fast forward, etc.) To
configure the software for Westrex control, select Westrex Test Jig
from the film platform selections in the CONFIG dialog box. Once
connected to the Westrex Test Jig, using the START/STOP button in the
QC software also starts and stops the Westrex unit. In addition to
forward motion, several buttons are provided at the bottom of the
QC display (these buttons are only visible if the Westrex Test Jig
is selected in the CONFIG option) to allow for film fast forward, rewind
and fast rewind. A forward and reverse jog is also provided. A
search feature is also included in the Westrex interface option. Using
the mouse, position the cursor over the desired footage displayed on the
ECC error chart. Press the RIGHT mouse button. The QC software will
then command the Westrex hardware to either rewind or forward to the
	   desired film footage address.

10 In addition to creating QC reports on the printer, a DCM report containing
a list of footages and frames where DCMs occurred can also be created
and printed. The CONFIG menu option allows you to select the type of
report desired (general QC report - ECC data collected and/or DCM report),
and whether the each report should be printed and/or stored to disk. The
advantage of saving QC data to disk is that the data can later be loaded
into the software and reports can be generated and printed.

11 An optional bell alarm is available alerting the user when a DCM occurs.
Use the CONFIG pull-down menu to select the alarm option.

The above steps are intended to get a lab up and started. A more
detailed and comprehensive manual and installation procedure will be
	available in the near future.
