There’s a big Film-Tech presence in Dallas, but I guess no one wants to touch this topic. ;-)

Anyway, I wish to ask a D-FW question as it pertains to this project. You may have noticed in the Part 1 section I included applicable Tarrant County venues. In the Part 2 section, however, I have chosen not to include the applicable Tarrant County details (other than the “Mid Cities” such as Arlington). So...do you think all of the Tarrant County stuff should be included, or do you D-FW’ers consider Fort Worth a totally separate market from Dallas and as such ought to be excluded?

I think Fort Worth and Dallas should be kept separate.

1982-03-06 … BLADE RUNNER … Northpark (sneak preview) - An interesting piece of history happened at this screening. There were two copies of the final reel with different endings. The final reel was decided only a few minutes before the changeover by Ridley Scott, as he was judging audience reactions. The projectionist who ran that show said he just barely was able to get it threaded in time, that it was threaded and ready with less than one minute before the changeover occurred.

I doubt it. From what I understand Fotokem has experienced quite the kick from Covid-19 and I believe they let all of their film lab staff go without furloughing. Those people are going to have to find other jobs to protect themselves and their families, so will they even be there when this is all over? Think about all of the opticals that must be done. Think about all of the negative cutting that must be done. I've got $20 that says if any prints are struck that they will be from a digital source, and quite likely we may be looking at only 10-20 prints if Fotokem only has one or two guys left trying to handle it all.

The 3 installs that I did with my own equipment for Christopher Nolan just before Interstellar was released were all uninstalled on June 29th, so these 3 locations are no more:
*LOOK Cinemas in Dallas, TX (theater has permanently closed)
*SMG Arlington in Arlington, TX (theater open with digital projection only now)
*SMG Royal in Dallas, TX (theater open with digital projection only now)

Doesn't sound hopeful indeed... quite possibly yet another Coronavirus victim, 2020 will become a watershed moment for the entire industry...

It was nice to see 70mm gain some traction again as part of a limited revival. To me, it doesn't really make any sense though, to watch anything in 70mm, when the source will be a digital intermediate.

The LOOK in Dallas seemed like a nice place, sad to see it close after just a few years of operation. I guess the decision not to reopen was also based on mediocre attendance from before this whole crisis started?

That's very sad news - I've only ever seen one 70mm presentation (2001 at the PCC London, about a week before they removed their curved screen), and I was really hoping to see more in the future.

After all these years, I’ve FINALLY(!) been able to access a complete collection of The Dallas Morning News and as such have been able to make some corrections and fill in many of the gaps in my “70mm Presentations in Dallas” historical project. As such, I am posting here a revised (but still a work in progress) draft in the event any Film-Tech members familiar with Dallas-Ft. Worth moviegoing may wish to offer any useful feedback before publication.

70mm Presentations in Dallas

A Chronology of 70mm Large Format Exhibition, 1956-Present

Compiled by Michael Coate

What follows is a chronology of 70mm six-track stereophonic sound feature-film presentations in the Dallas-Fort Worth region of Texas, USA.

The focus of this work is 5-perf 70mm feature films and the cinemas in which they were exhibited. Short subjects, 8-perf and 15-perf (IMAX, Iwerks, etc.) and Special Venue presentations have not been included (but consideration will be given to adding them in a revision).

The emphasis here is on the titles that received publicly-promoted, commercial exhibition in 70mm and their playdates. To facilitate an easy-to-reference title- and date-based layout, no details have been provided pertaining to the brand of 70mm (i.e. Todd-AO, Super Panavision, Ultra Panavision, Cinerama, D-150, etc.) or technical particulars of each presentation (i.e. O-neg source, inter-neg source, blow-up, pillarboxed, letterboxed, Dolby A, Dolby SR, five screen channels vs. three, baby boom, split surround, digital sound, etc.).

Note that some of the titles included in this chronology were presented in 35mm (or, recently, DCP) during the latter week(s) of their engagement due to contractual terms or print damage (and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm replacement print) or because the booking was moved to a non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. In these cases, any 35mm portion of the engagement has been included in the duration figure.

During the roadshow era, the reserved-seat policy, in some instances, was relaxed during the summer and/or latter weeks of the run. Any non-roadshow portion of such an engagement has been included in the applicable duration figure.

A Chronology of 70mm Large Format Exhibition, 1956-Present

What follows is a chronology of 70mm six-track stereophonic sound feature-film presentations in the Dallas-Fort Worth region of Texas, USA.

The focus of this work is 5-perf 70mm feature films and the cinemas in which they were exhibited. Short subjects, 8-perf and 15-perf (IMAX, Iwerks, etc.) and Special Venue presentations have not been included (but consideration will be given to adding them in a revision).

The emphasis here is on the titles that received publicly-promoted, commercial exhibition in 70mm and their playdates. To facilitate an easy-to-reference title- and date-based layout, no details have been provided pertaining to the brand of 70mm (i.e. Todd-AO, Super Panavision, Ultra Panavision, Cinerama, D-150, etc.) or technical particulars of each presentation (i.e. O-neg source, inter-neg source, blow-up, pillarboxed, letterboxed, Dolby A, Dolby SR, five screen channels vs. three, baby boom, split surround, digital sound, etc.).

Note that some of the titles included in this chronology were presented in 35mm (or, recently, DCP) during the latter week(s) of their engagement due to contractual terms or print damage (and the distributor’s unwillingness to supply a 70mm replacement print) or because the booking was moved to a non-70mm-equipped auditorium within a multiplex. As well, the reverse may have been true in some cases whereas a booking began with a 35mm print because the lab was unable to complete the 70mm print order in time for an opening-day delivery or the exhibitor negotiated a mid-run switch to 70mm. In these cases, any 35mm portion of the engagement has been included in the duration figure.

During the roadshow era, the reserved-seat policy, in some instances, was relaxed during the summer and/or latter weeks of the run. Any non-roadshow portion of such an engagement has been included in the applicable duration figure.
